Swine Flu in Mexico- Saturday Cancun Update

There really isn't much new information today on the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico. The most recent media releases indicate that no new cases have been reported since yesterday. There are still zero cases being reported in Cancun and the state of Quintana Roo. WHO (World Health Organization) is actively involved in the investigation of the outbreak, stating that it is a public health emergency and calling for close attention to the matter in Mexico City and central parts of the country. Twenty deaths have been confirmed as being a result of the swine flu, forty-eight others are being investigated and an estimated 1000 people are ill in Mexico City and central Mexico.

According to InsideMexico.com, officials in Mexico City are taking great precautions and urging citizens to stay home, distributing surgical masks in the subways and streets and canceling public events and gatherings for the next 10 days. Schools have been closed and many theaters and sporting arenas have shut their doors.

Authorities in Quintana Roo have released a preventative alert and the airport is taking precautionary measures, apparently screening arriving passengers with a questionaire. Cancun hospitals and pharmacies are reporting nothing out of the ordinary and the people of Cancun and Quintana Roo remain calm and currently unaffected by the virus.

In my previous post I jokingly said "If it makes you feel better, get a flu shot". I do want to clarify that there is no vaccine for the swine flu, just like vitamin C won't help you. I realize it might not have been clear that I was being flippant, I am not prescribing medication or suggesting that a flu shot would be helpful in any way. I sure hope you wouldn't come to me for medical advice, I'm definitely not a doctor, just a collator of news.

To stay up to date on the situation in Mexico, follow WHO for world wide English updates and Noticaribe for local Cancun and Quintana Roo news. Yes, Noticaribe is in Spanish, but Google Translate can help you out with a decent translation and the site does a good job on keeping up with the local events in a timely manner. If you're really interested, follow #influenza or #swineflu on Twitter, but be warned, it's not all news, there is a lot of chatter as well. When news breaks, Twitter has it first though.

For tourists, I wouldn't cancel trips yet, at this moment in time, it's all clear in Cancun. This moment in time is Saturday April 25 around 5:30 CST (I know news can change fast but I'm not going to update frequently), keep watching the news for further developments. There are currently no travel warnings or advisories suggesting that anyone should cancel their vacations.

My wife and I are flying in to Cancun next Sunday. I'm nervous; she's not. We are down there every 3 months or so. Hope that Quintana Roo health officials continue to prepare and communicate. Thanks for your update

Costco in CUN had wipes at each checkout and at the entrance. Today in PdC, Sam's employees were all masked. I just stocked up on much groceries - we have rice and beans to last 3 months. I'm sure it's coming here, we can't help be isolated from this flu, and my eldest is already sporting a fever and body aches. Never thought I'd be wishing he had dengue instead of the flu.

I'm heading to Cozumel on May 13 and I'll admit that I am a little nervous. The fact is that there are already suspected cases where I live in Texas - so if I'm at risk either way I'd rather hang out on the beach!

Washing hands a lot and hoping for the best up here in Texas...

We are travel agents, we have had a dozen of calls, rescheduling their trips at least 3 weeks, that makes sense because if the flu is controlled or not will be known in 15 days at must. As US airlines allowed change dates most of the peoples are taking a safe period of 6 weeks. You may bargain with your hotel in rescheduling instead of canceling and best option is to ask for "open date", be sure to get a reconfirmation number with your new dates and same rates, an email will be enough. CanCun & Riviera Maya hotels are willing to keep their customers but all them are responsible organizations.

My parents are in Cancun right now for two weeks. Also, my wedding is in 3 1/2 weeks! I hope all goes well for them so they can get back in time and healthy for the wedding! (And to be healthy just to be healthy!) I have heard that airlines have already canceled about 40 flights back to the US because of swine flu. I hope this all clears up quickly, for everyone's safety.

To all: Wow, I am pleased to see the positive attitudes. For those who are moving forward with their travel plans, I hope you have a safe and healthy journey. For those who are still wondering what to do, hang in there, hopefully as days go by we'll have more information about the direction the infection is going to take.

I wish you all the best and thank you for your comments. I'll post any pertinent information in an update, probably later today (after I read a billion news articles and siphon through the hype). Thanks again.

Update: Until this time has been not confirmed cases of S Flu at CanCun. CanCun is part of the state of Quintana Roo which until this moment is free of cases, from suspected cases (28) 11 had been discarded and 17 are pending so we will keep you posted. We have several families booked for May-6, May 20 and hencenforth and everything looks fine. At NYC was reported that a group of students get infected, but no cases at CanCun have been found; could may occurred at other cities so more research is needed. We do not recommend to Mexico City if is not needed because due to the preventive measures all major restaurants had shoutdown and scools will return until may the 6th. as well because the 90% of confirmed cases were from there. So be cautios at Mexico City and have fun at CanCun, anyhow we will keep posting some comments. If direct particular info is needed email to maurice@border.net..

Are restaurants, bars, and other entertainment venues still open in Cancun? In the news reports, it's not always clear if they are talking about closings in Mexico City or throughout Mexico.

I have a ticket to go to Cancun on May 16, so for now it's "wait and see".

All restaurants, Bars and Clubs at CanCun & Riviera Maya are open. The closure of restaurants are for the Metro area of Mexico City.

SCAM!Obama was in Mexico, had a private meeting with the Mexican president and some days after, there was a serious Swine flu outstreak... actually, the manager of the National Antrophology Museum in Mexico died from this desease and he guided Obama at the museum and shook hands with him, is Obama infected? obviously not! I hope that manager is not dead in any island far from Mexico with a big bank account in Switzerland! you know how many people who recovered from sickness have been interviewed?? NONE!!! do you know how many victims names have been given to public... NONE!! Do you know the name of the medicin which is helping people to recover? I bet YOU DON'T!!! definitely, there is something weird about this, and Americans are so nationalists and well-behaved as not to argue the government decisions and just obey when they are asked not to travel to any place... it sucks!

Unfortunately there a lot of people like Ricardo, who doesn’t have enough academic formation, neither, reliable information to post comments like the one he left. Ricardo is one of the really scammed peoples who are na├»ve enough to believe that the whole epidemic is a hoax. If we don’t follow strictly sanitary guides from authorized authorities a real pandemic may explode. Maybe Ricardo needs to visit CDC and other reliable sources to get informed, he will get real figures, CNN has interviews, and retro-viral agents for treatments are founded at CDC as well; please discard such candid but unintelligent comment.

I'll probably switch my trip from May to late August / early September. On the other hand, I'm thinking about going for two weeks instead of one.

Thanks for all you are doing on this blog. I hope you, your family, and friends will all be OK. I feel bad for all the good people in Cancun who will have to get by without much income for the next couple of months.

My daughter and her group of senior trip friends just returned from Cancun on Monday June 1st. They have been there since May 25th. Two of the kids came off the plane and went to the doctor. They both had flu symptons and one had a rash. They are confirmed to have the flu, not told if swine flu, but told it is the flu. They were sent home with face masks, Tamiflu and a 5 day quarantine. One more girl was going to the doctor yesterday with flu like systems but haven't heard anymore from her. I have my daughter at home and am keeping tabs on her. No symptons yet. I thought all this was over or I never would have sent her down there.

Just found out that the other girl from senior trip has been confirmed to have the flu also. That makes three kids and they all had symptons while on the plane. We are all freaked out at this point and are not sure what to do next.
