Mexico Travel Alerts Lifted

The best news we've had in a while, both the CDC in the United States and the FCO in Great Britain have lifted their travel warnings that have been restricting travel to Mexico since the swine flu/H1N1 crisis. Both organizations have downgraded their warnings to "precautions" and are no longer limiting citizens to essential travel. In addition, Carnival Cruise Lines are set to resume their Mexican ports of call.

Even more good news, local authorities have lifted the restrictions places on bars and restaurants, all facilities are now allowed to operate at 100% in Cancun and Quintana Roo. The only places that are closed are some hotels due to the lack of tourists visiting right now. Hopefully with the travel alerts being lifted the hotels will re-open very soon and the area can start to try to recuperate its losses.

It's a great time to book a trip down to the Mexican Caribbean, some great deals and great weather, if you love Mexico, get cracking on those reservations!

For those of you who live down here, be sure to keep an eye out for some fabulous local discounts as well. Many hotels are offering good day pass prices and Dolphin Discovery is offering packages for 350 pesos for adults to swim with dolphins, go to Garrafon or take the Lobster dinner cruise. Great deals if you've still got a job that is. Must have identification that proves you are Quintanarooense of course.

Glad to have some good news to share on this happy Friday. (Oh, it's "Teacher's Day" today, so happy day to all the maestros out there!)

Have a great weekend all.

Terrific news about the travel restrictions! Happy teacher day! My sister is a retired high school math teacher and my daughter is attending college to become a high school history teacher. Teachers rock!

Oh yeah - 22 days and counting till I'm on my way to Cancun!
This is great news for the residents of Mexico. They depend on tourism greatly and hopefully people will once again venture to Mexico.

This is fantastic! We arrived today and it is absolutely fabulous!!!! The water is beautiful, the people are so wonderful and the weather is perfect. We are staying at Le Blanc and my husband doesn't want to go home! lol OMG we have a "butler" and he's awesom, he helped me set up the WIFI for my lap top. I LOVE IT! Please, anyone thinking of coming down NOW is the time to do it. The flight ( I HATE TO FLY) was great too. I am so glad we did't cancel!!!
Kelly, that you for all the great info you gave.

Funny, still no big news report to say 'it's ok now'... They create absolute chaos and fear, stir up all sorts of sh!t, then walk away when the story is no longer interesting...
But good that you're safe to leave the house again ;-)

My girlfriend and I will be down there on May 29th. Any good discounts for us visitors as well? Swimming with the dolphins sounds like fun!! Can dolphins get swine flu?? Just kidding!!! I agree, all the major networks should be reporting about the lifting of the travel restrictions to Mexico. The lift of the restriction should be bigger news than the flu hysteria they created!!!

We just got back on Saturday 5/16. My wife and 3 children arrived on 5/10. The weather was mid 80's and beautiful all week. When we arrived to Casamagna Marriott, the occupancy rate was 5%. It was almost a ghost town hotel. The good was, no lines, quick service, easy negotiating down anything, and a hotel almost all to ourselves. The bad was, some restaurants were closed, the vibe was not the same without people, and because your almost the only tourists, the local merchants hit you harder on buying from them. The last one was to be expected. Anyhow, when we left, the hotel occupancy rate rose to 17%. So people are making their way to Cancun. We had to layover in Mexico City round trip and as of now, crossing fingers, nobody in my family is sick.

We're happy we went. Wish we could book again and be there next week/month. ;-)

Thanks Canuck for your blog. I told many in Cancun about your blog and how we used it to guage our decision to visit.

I just got back from the Iberostar Paraiso Maya near Puerto Morelos (last minute change from Coz, since hotel closed then re-opened). I had a great time! The only swine flu residue was getting temps checked at the Cancun airport. The plane was full from DFW both ways, could be the result of cutting flights - hopefully it's the result of people getting over the hysteria. I also spread the word about your blog, especially to people who were "first-timers" in Mexico.

I would love to help out the economy again if I can get some more time off work...hope you had a great weekend!

Thanks all! So great to hear from people who have returned, I really appreciate your input! Hopefully things will get back to normal soon, though just this morning my boss announced that we are taking a pay cut and my hours were cut. I really do wish the mainstream media would shout it from the roof tops that it is ok to travel, but we all know that is not going to happen.

Thanks again everyone!

With this news we believe that economic recovery in Cancun Mexico is in the short term. The tourists began to return to our beaches and fill the hotels. Thank you

i just got an email from my hotel for july 1-6..they're closing and giving me the chance to cancel my reservation or transfer to a partner hotel :(

Pau- Take the transfer! Most of the hotel chains are putting people up in their best property. Ask for an upgrade for your troubles, you might just get a suite or spa credits if you ask nicely. Hope it works out for you. May I ask which hotel it was?
