The Worms Go In

It finally happened, my sweet little computer died.  We were hit by a worm last week and despite all Hubby's best efforts and all the anti-virus software in the world, "Pooter" as I affectionately call her, bit the bullet last night.  I'm in the cyber cafe right now just checking in, but oh woe is me, I am mourning my baby.  Of course, it had to happen right when I was putting finishing touches on the exam that took me hours to create that I needed this morning for my kid's class.  All the time I spent making it personal and creative, with pictures, a reading comprehension exercise that was about everyone in the class, fun questions to make them think, kabooie.  I had to cut and paste some old boring exams together to make sure they had something this morning, but I am truly bummed they won't see my masterpiece.  And never mind checking emails, blogs, forums, news, these are just a few of my favourite things that I won't be seeing for a while.

Sooo, Hubby says it will take him a day or two to reformat the hard drive.  If that doesn't work, we are up the creek without a paddle for a while, there is no budget for "Pooter2".  Hang in with me, hopefully I'll be back to my normal, computer addicted self soon, happily blogging away and answering your oh so important emails.

Until then, just a reminder, back up your important documents and don't forget to run your anti-virus software!

Oh amiga - I feel your pain!!! My hard drive had to be erased entirely just after X-mas!! ALL my photos were gone... well that was just me being stupid!!!

Neways, hope it gets fixed soon as we will miss ya!!!

Side note - did see some GREAT sales at Costco(online) on lap tops.... Just in case.....
I have been meaning to do this.... I will do it right now. I am so sorry honey. Hang in there.

I am sorry that happened. It is always good advice to run anti-virus programs and to back up your docs and photos.
My computer had the black screen of death on Tuesday. Husband started working on it at 5am and finished at 2am (yes that would be 21 hours!)

All good now. Hope the same for you!

Good old reformat! Fingers crossed you don't lose anything...

Couple o tips to avoid future problems... (for pc'ers)

1. Create a C: and D: drive. don't put anything but windows on C:
Put all programs and files on D:, this way when your 'pooter' does need to be reformatted, your files and programs don't need to be touched
2. Like you said - backup! Buy an external drive and load up your files every once in awhile
3. Use anything but Internet Explorer! My new fav is google chrome.
4. Avoid 'friends' emails that have been forwarded with attachements...
5. I'll be good and say run anti-virus software (but i never do...)

If you've done all this and still having issues - use HiJack this!
Helps you identify and eliminate bugs...

Coby- Ahhh, Mr. Gamer, heehee! I like puzzle and word games, hidden object, match 3, things like that. I often use RealArcade of Big Fish games or similar sites. Just run the one hour demo until I am bored. Not much into action games or war games, don't get into community gaming either, just me against the computer. :)

Holly- Oh yes, the external hard drive is my main storage for photos, I back up frequently as I am terrified of losing them! Sorry to hear about your MacBook, sad to say goodbye to an old friend, isn't it?

Mare ad mare- Great tips, thanks so much! I didn't think of separating the c and d drives, great idea. Going to check out HiJack this, thanks!

Haha, that's great actually. It definitely means you're a bona fide 'casual gamer'!

Conveniently, those are the types of games I develop so I might throw you an unreleased demo for feedback in the future...

And, good to hear your computer is back on it's feet :)

Coby- Wow, that's great that you are developing those types of games, I am a big fan. I will secretly admit to pirating one or two of the ones I really liked in order to finish the adventure, but shhhh. Hope they weren't yours! BTW, I can't find the link to your blog (ugh, virus), and clicking your name doesn't get me anywhere, want to share your site with all of us one more time? If not, that's cool, shoot me some mail at cancuncanuck at gmail.com. Thanks!
I knew something happened as I saw Jorge's name on the messenger saying something about hating PC's and loving Macs!!

Happy that it is all fixed!

Momto3- LOL, Hubby's always going on about hating the PC and loving Mac, he doesn't need a virus as an excuse. :)

Coby- Argh. :) Adding you to the blog roll if that's alright.
