A Little Relieved, A Lot of Questions

The last few months I have been having some health issues. I won't get into the gory details, but things just aren't right. I finally got myself to the doctor last Thursday and she scared the crap out of me. "Surgery" she says. Serious surgery. She said this before any tests had been done, solely from a physical examination. I've spent the last few days absolutely stressing, worrying myself sick about what was to come in the next little while if indeed I needed to go under the knife. Would I be ok physically? Mentally? Financially? How could I care for Max? Would I do the surgery here or go to Canada or to Puebla or to Merida? Blah blah blah, my mind has been awhirl and I've been a bit of a basket case.

I went for an ultrasound today and within two seconds the technician said "Normal". "No hay nada?" I said ("There's nothing?). "No hay nada, todo es normal". ("There's nothing, everything is normal"). Well hrmph. Number one, why did the doctor freak me the #$%#$% out?? Number two, if it's "normal", why am I so sick?

While I do have a sense of relief that the test seems to be normal, I am still concerned about what's going on. I have to return to the doctor and have her look at the tests, but do I trust her? Do I spend double the money and get more opinions? Do I just have to assume that my ill health is "normal"? Does this mean I just have to suffer? Could I ask any more questions? Well, I guess questions are all I have right now, nothing definitive to worry about and no answers.

First things first, one must say that i have really enjoyed your blog and it has certainly helped my family with our transition from literally the other side of the world...Perth Western Australia, to Mexico. Wow...it has been one huge feat!
I have left my dearly loved profession back home whilst i play house mum in Mexico and your question regarding accepting this definitive result as "normal" is too certainly not accept this diagnosis. And whilst it is true we can feel unwell for no particular reason, the fact this has been going on for sometime is of concern. Listen and be in touch with your body because illnesses often manifest in varying ways. In the hands of a good medical practioner, who listens to you a diagnosis for your symptoms can be found.
Best of luck.

Go and get a second opinion. Sounds like your first doctor wanted to cut you open for no particular reason.
This just doesn't sound right to me. I would go back to the first doctor and ask questions. Google your symptoms too, but don't accept google as the final word. And find a doctor who is expert in your problems. If it's respiratory we have a great guy to recommend. Just because you ruled out one thing doesn't mean come it isn't another illness.
Plus remember if you do want to come to Merida, you have a place to stay,so that is one less expense!

Theresa

Yes, remember that this doctor wants to take a knife to tender parts... get a second opinion. Always. before letting someone cut into you. Think about that and realize that there are so many other things that can go wrong once they cut you open, don't take that risk without a backup opinion.

I don't think you should just live with it either, keep pushing and find a solution. There is one out there, you just have to describe and insist until you get it.

Also, take Theresa up on the offer if you need to. There are great doctors over here, specialists galore.

Hugs.

Specialist galore and friends to help as well. Anything we can do sweetie you just let us know.

Seriously, a second opinion is warranted when the first thing out of her mouth with out tests was surgery. Open up ask around for references for doctors in the field your having the problem, and know your loved!

Heather- Sorry to hear you are having issues too, awww, for some good old Canadian health care, what a dream! Hope you find the care you need and feel better soon!

Len- Welcome, so nice to hear from you! Congrats on the biiiiiig move, that is a huge feat! Thanks for your very kind words, I appreciate it. I will be getting a second opinion, I'm not going to let this go on any longer. I hope you stick around for more, would love to hear about your own tales (hint hint, new blog from Len, new blog from Len!)

Trixie- Yep, second (and possibly third) opinions will be sought. Medicine is a business here, often surgery happens when the doctor is feeling their own financial crunch, KWIM? I would never just trust one opinion on something so serious, especially down here. Even in Canada with its excellent health care system, I would want to talk to more than one doctor.

Theresa- It doesn't sound right to me either! I've googled and "internet doctored" and come up with some of my own ideas of what might be happening. I've got some recommendations of other doctors here and will be following up. (It's a "girly" issues, not respiratory thank goodness, but it's good to know that you know someone). Bless you for the kind offer of a place to stay in Merida, it is MUCH appreciated!

Jonna- I definitely do not want to jump into surgery, it will be a last resort as far as I am concerned. At this point, there is no way I can just live with it, it's interfering with my regularly scheduled fun life (and my work). If I need to take a trip to Merida, I certainly will, it's an option we've been discussing. Hugs back atcha!

Mimi- Thanks sweetie, I really appreciate your friendship! It was difficult stewing about this and not sharing, I'm glad I did, I feel better knowing there are people like you out there willing to offer love and support. MUA!

KW- Thanks amiga, I am going to take care of it. I finally told my mom and dad what is up and they are very concerned as well. If worse comes to worst, I may make the trip to Detroit/Windsor to see what can be done.

Thanks all, I can't tell you how much it means to me to have so many wonderful people looking out for me!

Hey K,

Definitely get a second opinion, think how much better it will feel when you get a SECOND confirmation that everything is OK. Plus, the second doctor will probably be able to give you more info on what may be the matter.

Here's thinking of ya and hoping you you get better soon!

Ge thee to merida wench and surround thyself with proper doctors and good friends. Seriously, trust your instincts. "Normal" doesn't sound normal to me.

Kelly, I have to agree with everyone else...get yourself to a specialist in "girly" problems and find out what is wrong. Don't have surgery unless it is completely unavoidable.
My prayers will be with you.

I could not agree more with what everybody else has said. Amazing that surgery was the first thing out of her mouth before she even had the test results. I sure hope this works out okay for you.

Kelly --
Like everyone here has said, I would get a second opinion too. Surgery would be too drastic of a thing to do without double checking.

Glad that you have so many people in the "real" world and the cyber world who care about you.

Good luck with everything!

Fned- Second opinion is definitely on the horizon. I've got a health update coming today (hopefully) and I am quite certain that I need a new doc. Gracias amiga!

Michele- Nope, things are not normal at all. I've got a recommendation for a doctor here from several friends, will give him a shot and see if what he says sounds right and if he can't come up with a solution.

Sandye- Surgery will NOT be happening unless I am absolutely convinced it's necessary and right now I am certainly not. Going to try another doc and see what happens. Something has to change!

My3ros- Thanks girl, I'm on it (and so is Hubby, he's been really supportive).

Gringo- Thanks man, she really freaked me out telling me she was going to rip out all my girly bits. Grrrrrrrr.

Amy- It sure is nice to know that there are people looking out for me, as you say both in "real" life and "cyber" life. I can't imagine going through this without the internet, I think it's an incredible tool for educating yourself on so many things, health matters included. Thanks for the luck!

Teresa- Thanks so much, surgery is not in my plans, I really don't think it is what is warranted for me. If there is any way to avoid it, I will.
